Amcor Kiwi Packaging calls on Engineering design team
When it comes to working close with another company, you can't get much closer than your next door neighbour. Amcor Kiwi Packaging NZ and Gough Engineering have, over a number of years, had an excellent working relationship. Amcor Kiwi embarked on an expansion programme to include a new Board Corrugator which required a new building to be built. Gough Engineering was asked to provide a custom design and build solution on how to load up to 3-tonne rolls of paper on the corrugater.
Kevin Rowland, Amcors Production Manager, approached Gough Engineering for its ability to provide a custom design solution knowing that Gough Engineering would be able to fill in the gaps.
Kevin was impressed with the system as it gave him the ability to see in detail what is going to be coupled with Andrews skill at converting ideas in to a working model - all before anyone started to cut steel.
Kevin said that having a design department so close to the site was excellent. Because the reel tracks are installed at ground level, the foundation plan is required before the floor was laid.
"Details had to be correct" Andrew Gallington said. The design included a lifting frame and a trolley both of which are powered by an hydraulic power pack. Andrew also devised the control system and control panel to provide a functional solution with the minimum of PLC's.
"The whole project was a major undertaking by Amcor Staff and they are to be congratulated" he said. Kevin Rowland said that Gough Engineering's design was extremely sound as evidenced by the very few problems at commissioning. "Any problems we did have were very easily solved and the quality was fantastic," he said.
